NEW WATERSHED SPECIALISTS HIRED
Former county extension agents Warren Bell and Stacie Edgett Minson have
been hired as watershed specialists for K-State Research and Extension. Warren,
formerly the Coffey County Agricultural and Natural Resources
Agent, is the new Neosho Watershed Specialist. He begins those duties on
November 15. Stacie, who was the Trego County Extension Director, is now
the Smoky Hill/Kanopolis Lake Watershed Specialist. She begins those
duties November 3. The watershed specialists are supported by the Kansas
Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment and other state

STUDY ON IMPACT OF DOWNSIZING ON THE
ATTITUDES OF COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SURVIVORS
Keith Martikainen, a 4-H Youth Development professional in Nebraska,
is doing his doctoral dissertation on the impacts of downsizing of the
organization on individuals in extension systems. He would like to

JIM LINDQUIST HONORED AT GALAXY II
At the recent Galaxy II conference in Salt Lake City, Dr. Jim
Lindquist was honored to receive the NC Regional Distinguished Service
Award from Epsilon Sigma Phi, the honorary organization of Cooperative
Extension professionals. Jim has served in leadership roles on
state, regional, and national committees for the extension system and
Epsilon Sigma Phi. This recognition is the highest honor at the

EXTENSION MINI GRANTS AVAILABLE
K-State Research and Extension has approximately $3,000 for Mini Grants
made available through USDA/SARE Professional Development Program funds.
The purpose of the mini grant program is to promote county level, grass
roots efforts to improve the viability of the Kansas family farmer and
the Kansas communities in which they live. Appropriate outputs include
projects that seek to implement community activities, production
practices, financial planning or stewardship activities that improve the
viability of the Kansas family farmer and the Kansas community.
To these outputs, county extension agents
are invited to submit proposals in support of educational programs,
events, activities, demonstrations, and other innovative educational
projects. Competitive grants of up to $750 are available.
Project proposals including a budget are
due November 21, 2003. The complete application information is available

TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR
COMMUNITY FOOD SYSTEMS WORKSHOP
Travel scholarships for registration and lodging costs are available
for extension educators to attend the Community Food Systems Workshop on
November 17 and 18 in Salina. These scholarships are available to FCS,
Horticultural and Agricultural agents.
The workshop will present information
about the characteristics of community food systems and differences
between local and global systems, learn how to apply this information to
your work, and learn about local food system-related resources in
Kansas.

AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS SEMINAR
"The Relevance of the Land Grant Mission in the 21st
Century" is the title of the seminar presented by Dr. Neil E. Harl.
Dr. Harl is the Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in
Agriculture and Professor of Economics at Iowa State University.
He is a member of the Iowa Bar. Dr. Harl is also Director of the
Center for International Finance. His primary areas of emphasis at
Iowa State University have been agricultural law, agricultural finance,
and resource economics.
The seminar will be Tuesday, November 18,
2 p.m., at the KSU Alumni Center Ballrooms B and C. For more

SHARON HEIDEMANN RETIREMENT
Douglas County Extension invites the public to attend a retirement
reception for Sharon Heidemann, Friday, November 7, 3 to 6 p.m., at the
Douglas County Extension Office, 2110 Harper Street, Lawrence.
Sharon will be retiring on December 31,
after serving extension for over thirty-five years. Twenty-five of
those years have been in Douglas county.

Thank you to everyone for your support and words of compassion and
the contributions to Mom's Memorial Fund. This is such a difficult time
in our lives, especially so soon after Dad's passing in August. The
outpouring of sympathy and support we have received was more than we
could have anticipated. We have found some comfort in the knowledge that
Mom and Dad are together again. Thank you all once again. --Carol and
