ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH Speaking of annual conference, the line-up of speakers, topics, and learning opportunities looks truly great. We will have Dr. Colien Hefferan, highest ranking administrator within our federal agency partner, USDA-CSREES, talking with us on initiatives, priorities, and integration of research and extension at the federal level. She has also made herself available to lead discussions in the afternoon breakouts on becoming more successful in pursuing grants through the National Research Initiative and other collaborative agencies at the federal level for both research and extension integrated projects. All the learning and discussion sessions on both Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning will hopefully capture your interest in some way by reflecting on some of your work as an educator and as a researcher. Please study those topic choices and attend a session. It's a rare opportunity to have the breadth and depth of key K-State Research and Extension priority initiatives presented in such a tight time frame. I know the other value of annual conference is in bringing people from across the organization together to renew acquaintances, share stories, and exchange ideas. With that, please wear your name badge and take the time to walk up and introduce yourself to individuals you have not met from across the K-State Research And Extension system. TO ALL OZNET E-MAIL SERVER USERS... Access to "Webmail.oznet.ksu.edu" will end November 1. Please begin using "Webmail.ksu.edu" to retrieve new messages. We will be happy to help you with this transition. If your computer e-mail client (Pegasus Mail, Netscape, Thunderbird, or Outlook) has not been reconfigured to use the KSU e-mail server by November 1, you will lose access to e-mail. Messages will be not lost during the transition. Please work with us to be sure you don't lose access to your new messages on November 1. If you are still using the OzNet e-mail server, please contact your computer support person or IET, 785-532-6270, to help you reconfigure your e-mail client to use the KSU e-mail server. KATRINA/RITA FUND AT NASULGC The ASRED and AEA have decided that the fund initially designated for Hurricane Katrina victims in the Extension family will be extended to victims from Hurricane Rita in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Therefore, funds postmarked after October 1, 2005, will be available to Extension family members affected by either storm. Funds postmarked prior to that date will be available to only those affected by Katrina as was initially discussed. All funds availability is subject to application and approval. Please make checks payable to: NASULGC - Hurricane Extension Disaster Fund. Send to the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), Department 0545, Washington, DC 20073-0545. These will be tax deductible with receipts issued for those contributions above $250. Otherwise, your check will serve as your receipt. Please pass this information to others who might be interested. BENEFIT FOR HURRICANE EXTENSION
DISASTER FUND The Association of Southern Region Extension Directors and the Association of Extension Administrators agreed to assist Extension faculty and staff who suffered personal loss from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As a result, this fund has been set up at NASULGC to receive donations for these regional associations to disperse to Extension staff in need as a result of the hurricane. Please donate items such as K-State merchandise, decorations, or whatever you think appropriate. By October 14, please let Ann Domsch, adomsch@oznet.ksu.edu , or 785-537-5147, know what you are donating. Bring your items to the Annual Conference registration area, Monday or Tuesday, or to the Alumni Center at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. DIVERSITY PROGRAMS UPDATE The Watermelon Feed was held on August 30, and was a huge success with informing individuals about diversity and what can be done to improve their classrooms and offices. It also brought a lot of new faces to the Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Program. The members of MANRRS have been quite busy as well. They have set dates to have an officer’s retreat, business and social meetings. They are also working on a fundraiser with Pizza Hut in Aggieville, so please support our chapter. The Diversity Programs Office has a new member of the family. We are pleased to welcome the new graduate research assistant. Her name is Marsha McDade and she is from Denver, Colorado. She is working on her Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in Agriculture Law. She has been working diligently to research the recruitment and retention of minorities in high schools throughout Kansas. As a part of Agriculture Orientation class, Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland came to the Kansas State University Career Fair on September 20, and had the pleasure of sharing their experiences and positions on diversity in the workplace to the course. Marsha was also a big help to the corporations while they were under our care at Kansas State University. Congratulations to Renee Jones, K-State's MANRRS Chapter President, for her induction into the Multicultural Honor Society on Sunday, October 2. As we move into October, please be reminded to share the Diversity Program Office’s scholarship opportunities with your peers and students. EXTENSION MINI GRANTS AVAILABLE Project proposals including a budget are due November 7, 2005. NELD: NORTH CENTRAL 2006 This is Class XII for the program consisting of four 3-day seminars designed to build leadership in Cooperative Extension at all organizational levels. SESQUICENTENNIAL QUILT SHOW TO MARK BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
AT K-STATE'S CANCER RESEARCH CENTER The show, which celebrates 150 years of Riley County history, will open Tuesday, October 4, and may be viewed by the public anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. The cancer center is in 1 Chalmers Hall, 17th Street and Claflin Road. Limited free parking for cancer center guests is available along 17th Street. An opening reception will be 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 7, at the center. The reception is free and the public is invited to attend. The quilters guild was established in 1978 to promote the art of quilt making, stimulate interest in quilts and provide educational programs. Each quilt in this show features at least one pictorial element reflecting local history. Many are autobiographical. The Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research strives to further the understanding of cancers by funding basic cancer research and supporting higher education, training and public outreach. Cancer center presentations and tours are available by appointment.
