WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Nominate a colleague or peer for one of the K-State Research and Extension Annual Awards .

I probably don't need to say anymore than that to make my point. But, I will say more.

I expect you to open up the link above and review all the various types of awards that recognize excellence among individuals and teams within K-State Research and Extension. Then, I expect you to take the initiative to think of individuals or teams who should be nominated. Then, contact that individual or team members to suggest that this recognition is deserved, and that you would be willing to work with them in putting together a nomination. Note that I said "work WITH them" to put together the nomination. The strongest nominations are ones that both the nominator and the nominee(s) team together to create the 2 page statement. The one exception among the award list is probably the Mentor Award, where it is really up to the nominee to put that nomination forward. All the rest can and should be team work. Think of what you have just conveyed to that individual or team! You have said that you noted the excellent work and the contributions they have made, such that you believe it to be worthy of such prestigious recognition. No finer way to give your colleague a boost.

I want to see a large number of nominations coming in. In addition to the K-State Research and Extension Annual Awards, you also have awards within your various professional organizations, and especially Epsilon Sigma Phi awards, which cut across all of Extension. I hope you will acknowledge excellence among your colleagues and help them in putting together a strong nomination packet for review and potential recognition at Annual Conference this fall.

GROWING GROWERS WORKSHOP
The Growing Growers Workshop, "Taste and Nutrition," will be Monday, July 14, 4 to 7 p.m., in Lawrence, KS.

There will be presentations on nutrition, flavor and preparation of local food.

FREE REGISTRATION - INVITATION FOR ATTENDANCE

The Consortium for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (CESAS), K-State Director of Sustainability, and partners, are hosting the Third Annual Dialog on Sustainability, July 17, 2008, at the Alumni Center, to disseminate information on current sustainability related activities, groups and resources; and to explore opportunities for further collaboration and future funding. The focus will be on Students; Classes, Curriculum, Community; Operations; Research; and Engagement (SCORE). Registration opens at 8 a.m. and the program starts at 9 a.m., with sessions throughout the day on wind energy, community development, energy policy, K-State initiatives; featuring discussion panels, interactive exercises, field tours, and a potluck at Long’s Park.

All who are interested are invited to attend and actively participate in the dialog. There is no registration fee, but please pre-register by sending your name and e-mail address to Sheree Walsh, smw@ksu.edu so that we will have a seat reserved for you. 

We encourage you to bring information to share (e.g., brochures, flyers, fact sheets, etc.) on sustainable activities that your organization is involved with; tables are available.  Also, posters, exhibits, university course descriptions, and information on future sustainability events are invited. FNP JMG HEALTH AND NUTRITION FROM THE GARDEN WORKSHOPS
Just a reminder that two FNP Junior Master Gardener trainings are scheduled for July. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the Junior Master Garden "Health and Nutrition from the Garden" curriculum. Emphasis will be placed on youth gardening programs that teach nutrition. Dates and locations for the workshops are:

Wednesday, July 23, 4-H Hall "A", Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, 7001 W. 21st St. No, Wichita, KS.

Workshops will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m.; opening remarks are 10 a.m., and we'll conclude at 3 p.m. The $20 registration fee includes lunch, materials, and a notebook. 4-H HORTICULTURE COMMENT CARDS
Three new comment cards for 4-H Horticulture entries are now available.

These comment cards will be used at the 2008 State Fair. In addition to the vegetable/fruit comment card, there are comment cards for Cut Flower Specimens, Flower Arrangements and Horticulture Notebooks. The comment cards can be found on the 4-H Website under "Projects". Click on Project Judging Standards (Plant Science). AUGUST UPDATE

DISCOVER THE LEADER WITHIN YOU...
Only SIX spaces remain for the fall leadership workshop – Discovering the Leader Within You, October 7-9, at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, Wichita, KS.  Sponsored by the Leadership PFT,  the workshop will use the Leadership Practices Inventory, which is backed by 25 years of original research and data created by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner at Santa Clara University. Over its 20-year history, The Leadership Challenge and practices inventory has sold over one million copies and has been translated into 12 languages. The workshop uses the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® model which outlines the key leadership competencies that are essential to getting extraordinary things done in organizations and communities.  When leaders are at their personal best, they:  

• Model the Way,
• Share and Inspired Vision,
• Challenge the Process,
• Enable Others to Act, and
• Encourage the Heart.  

The workshop will explore each of these 5 practices and participants will receive a personal assessment of their leadership skills.

MARKETING MINUTE: AREAS OF INTEREST, MEANS OF COMMUNICATION FOR METRO RESIDENTS
A statewide telephone survey was conducted in Summer 2007 for K-State Research and Extension, to find out what type of information metro audiences wanted. Of those who indicated they lived in "urban" or "suburban" areas, two-thirds or more said they were "very interested" in the following types of information:

-Environmental Preservation
-Health and Nutrition
-Home and Family
-Youth Development
