Find Your Fun at the Kansas State Fair

Submitted by Susan Metzger

Kansas State Fair 2018 Theme: Find Your Fun

K-State Research and Extension will once again have a booth in the Pride of Kansas building at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. The Kansas State Fair runs from Friday, September 7, through Sunday, September 16. Volunteering is a great opportunity to represent K-State, increase awareness about KSRE, recruit future K-State students, and share our expertise with Fair attendees.

This year we will dedicate each day of the Fair to one of our Program Focus Teams (PFTs). The goals of highlighting a PFT each day are to increase the visibility of our services and expertise and hopefully improve the experience for those volunteering to serve at the Fair. We encourage PFTs, plus faculty, staff and students on campus, in area offices, county/district offices, Agronomy Fields, and Research-Extension Centers to sign up to work for a few hours in the booth.

The schedule is as follows:

• Friday, September 7 - Adult Development & Aging
• Saturday, September 8 - Farm Management (and KFMA)
• Sunday, September 9 - Crop Production
• Monday, September 10 - Family & Child Development
• Tuesday, September 11 - Family Resource Management
• Wednesday, September 12 - Horticulture
• Thursday, September 13 - Natural Resource
• Friday, September 14 - Livestock Production
• Saturday, September 15 - Nutrition, Food Safety & Health
• Sunday, September 16 - Community Vitality

We will be using SignUp.com to help organize and manage the volunteer times. Please visit the SignUp.com site, http://signup.com/go/bqdLNFs, and indicate the time you are available to serve in the KSRE booth. You are not limited to volunteering only on days related to your PFT.

Step Right Up and Win a Prize! Engaging Fair attendees in meaningful conversation and interaction with our booths can be challenging. So this year our booths will feature a prize wheel game with questions about K-State, KSRE, and the PFT topics.

Visitors participating in the prize wheel game receive a small prize such as a pin or collapsible water bottle. Visitors providing correct responses will also be given the opportunity to enter their name for a larger prize.

Entry tickets and instructions will be provided to all volunteers. In addition, this year we will hold a webinar prior to the Kansas State Fair to help prepare and provide helpful information about volunteering. It will be the responsibility of those working to ensure they attend or watch a training to know how to work the booth.

We appreciate your contribution of time and talent to represent KSRE at the Kansas State Fair! Questions? Email Susan Metzger, Senior Executive Administrator to the Dean/Director of the College of Agriculture and KSRE, at smetzger@ksu.edu.
