Volunteer Screening DCF Change
On January 1, 2019 the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) will require a new form for all DCF central registry checks. In preparation for this change, as a system we have been evaluating our current volunteer background screening process. The DCF registry check is one aspect of a multi-faceted process established as a baseline to help ensure the safety of the youth and families we serve. The process also includes a comprehensive nationwide criminal background check including sex offender registries, a volunteer application, interview process, orientation, and local board approval.
The DCF registry check increases the risk associated with handling sensitive personal information. Based on this level of risk and the timing of the change in DCF procedure, the DCF registry check will not be a required component of the screening process starting January 1, 2019.
This change also reflects current best practices from the National Mentoring Partnership, the American Camp Association, the National Alliance for Youth Sports, the North Central 4-H Volunteer Development group, and other Kansas University policies.
