Back to the Basics - In an approach to assist sheep producers, Hodgeman County K-State Research and Extension will host a free informational Southwest District Sheep School Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at the Hodgeman County 4-H Building, 1005 Atkin Street, Jetmore, KS.

The day will begin with the new producer’s part of the program, with registration from 9:00-9:30 a.m. The morning will be geared for newer producers and review for others.

Topics covered include: Basic Sheep Information, Nutrition, Ration Balancing, General Management, and Record Keeping.

Speakers will be Dr. Alison Crane, KSU Sheep Specialist; DeWayne Craghead, Hodgeman County Extension; Ron Gibson, Producer; Joseph Hubbard, KSU Sheep Farm Manager and Producer. At 11:15, Dr. Emily Reppert, KSU Vet School, will be discussing Health Considerations.

After a complementary lunch, we will start the afternoon session at 1:00 p.m. Program Topics are: Superior Farms Update; NSIP & Scanning Ewes for fetuses; Facilities, Minerals, Embryo Count; Biosecurity Plan; Lambing Barn Cameras; Leasing and Mentoring; Grazing; Electronic Ear Tags; Technology Conference, and LambEx 2018, Australia Trip.

Speakers include: Lesa Eidman, Superior Farm; Dr. Alison Crane, KSU Sheep Specialist; DeWayne Craghead, Hodgeman County Extension; Ron Gibson, Producer; Joseph Hubbard, KSU Sheep Farm Manager and Producer; Keith Harmoney, KSU Range and Forage Specialist; Stephen Simon, Producer; Justin Smith, State of KS Veterinarian, if available.
