The Diversity Programs Office Update and Upcoming Events
Greetings, we are over half-way through the semester, which means classes are getting busier and the holiday seasons are among us. The Diversity Programs Office (DPO) is pleased to share the update below.
Thanks to all who participated in our first virtual “Growing Our Mindset Diversity” Forum. It was a success because of all of you! Our speaker, Mr. Ed Honesty, Jr., CEO of Best Harvest Bakeries did an excellent job discussing the importance of diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace! He is one of the only African Americans who owns and operates a bakery! We are so honored that Mr. Honesty took the time to share his expertise with our students, faculty and staff!
This week will serve as another opportunity of “firsts.” The College of AG DPO will participate in the Multi-state Virtual Extension Conference that will involve North Dakota, South Dakota and Kansas Cooperative Extension Services. We are so pleased to present on the importance of diversity at KSRE. Thanks to the KSRE Team who will present, Sue Sing Kim, Linda Gilmore and Dr. Nozella Brown. We hope you can join this most important event as we make history!!
On Friday, October 30, 2020, we will continue making history as we co-host the 2020 Dr. George Washington Carver Innovation, Academic and Leadership Award. We are pleased to congratulate Jordan Bailey, who is a junior majoring in Animal Sciences & Industry with an Ag Economics minor as the 2020 student award recipient representing Kansas State College of Agriculture. In its fifth year, the award is to recognize individuals for their outstanding work in areas readily associated with Dr. Carver, including, but not limited to the areas of agriculture, art, nature, science, spiritual matters, and textiles. More importantly, his service and leadership as a student has demonstrated the traits and characteristics of George Washington Carver that made him a successful educator, scientist, leader, and humanitarian. The awards program and symposium is a collaborative effort of the GWC Birthplace Association and the legacy institutions associated with Dr. George Washington Carver that are Simpson College, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Lincoln University (MO), and Tuskegee University.
Due to the global health pandemic this year’s program will be in virtual status on October 30, 2020 at 1 p.m. CDT. The Carver symposium will involve a renowned panel speaking on the theme, “Regenerative Agriculture: Engaging Black and Brown Voices in Building an Inclusive Agricultural Industry.” The panel includes Dr. Antoine Alston, Dr. Shannon, Archibeque-Engle and Dr. Monica White.
